Protest

My communications class is doing a protest. This was simply a random thing that my professor came up with on the spot as he was talking about the different types of groups. When he asked everyone for an example of a public group type, one person said, "A protest!" Then my professor became all giddy and said, "Hey guys, you wanna do a protest? What should we protest? And suddenly everyone was thinking of things to protest. The suggestions were all pretty silly and the main one was cafeteria food. Then my professor suggested something serious. He talked about how Crafton's and Valley's accreditation were put on warning last semester and how it was mainly the fault of the district and it's chancellor, Bruce Barron. He decided to do it in place of the original assignment, which was to observe a city council meeting and write a five page paper on it. Naturally, everyone agreed to this, and so it came about. However, soon after he realized that with a serious objective, the protest needed to be done because it's something you really care about, not something you want to do for a grade. So it then became an option between the protest and the original assignment. Now, I am not a spontaneous person, nor did I entirely agree with the objective which at that time was to get rid of the chancellor, so I chose the original assignment. Now, the objective has merely become to raise awareness of the situation among the students and should the chancellor be fired, to let the new chancellor know that he won't be getting away with the same things. Now, doing a council meeting while all this was going on in front of me seemed slightly boring, so I suggested to the professor that we do a paper on the protest, rather than a council meeting, and he was extremely enthusiastic about it. So now I'm observing the process of this protest for my paper, and I have to say, watching all of these people struggling to get this done within a week is very fun. They make things so complicated that would otherwise be so simple. They are not at all organized when it comes to people. Nobody really knows what they're doing until the time actually comes to do it. In the meantime, everyone's grades are based on how well they contribute to the project, so I'm sure some people are going crazy if they haven't done anything yet. Doing this paper was an excellent choice for me, because I can easily observe and see what they could have done better. I think this will be the first essay that I've ever actually enjoyed writing.
